The European Society of Endodontology is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthias Widbiller as Chair of the Research Committee from 1st January 2024. He will join the Executive Board for an initial term of 4 years and we wish him every success in this important role.
Matthias, an alumnus of the University of Regensburg, graduated in 2013 and started his career in the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology at the University Hospital Regensburg. He received his doctorate in 2015 and continued his postdoctoral training from 2017 to 2018 at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) in the research laboratory of Kenneth M. Hargreaves and Anibal Diogenes. His clinical focus includes regenerative endodontic therapies, vital pulp therapy and dental traumatology. In particular, he heads the Centre for Dental Traumatology at the University Hospital Regensburg. His achievements culminated in his appointment as Full Professor of Endodontics by the Medical Faculty of the University of Regensburg in 2023. Since 2021, he has held the position of Research Director in his department and leads a pulp biology research group. His scientific focus is on endodontic tissue engineering, with particular emphasis on the function of dental stem cells and the potential of bioactive proteins of the dentin matrix, as well as the immunological processes of the dental pulp.
In his role as Chair of Research, he will use his expertise and enthusiasm to advance the ESE’s goals and promote innovative scientific projects. He is keen to nurture the talents of young, creative scientists, giving them the opportunity to present their latest advances and to network through ESE's scientific events.
Matthias is a happy husband and father of a young boy. In his spare time, he enjoys baking his own bread and spending time with his family in the garden, where they grow a variety of fruit and vegetables.
