Report on the ESE S3-Level Guidelines on the Treatment of Pulpal and Apical Disease Guideline Summit

The inaugural European Society of Endodontology (ESE) S3-Level Clinical Guideline summit took place in Olissippo Oriente Hotel, Lisbon, Portugal, from the 29^th January to 1^st February 2023. This summit represented a culmination of two years of preparatory work, which involved the creation of four working groups (1- the treatment of pulpitis; 2- the non-treatment of apical periodontitis; 3- the surgical treatment of apical periodontitis; 4- the regenerative treatment of apical periodontitis), selection and agreement of relevant PICOTs questions, PROSPERO registration of 14 commissioned systematic reviews prior to extensive peer review and online publication in the International Endodontic Journal. Thereafter, during a series of preparatory online calls with methodologist Ina Kopp, co-lead Professor Moritz Kebschull and working group leaders the findings of the reviews were formulated into evidenced-based recommendations for discussion, modification and consensus voting at the Lisbon summit.

In total 53 delegates including a mix of guideline leads, working group leads, senior reviewers, endodontists and external stakeholders (including student and patient representatives) attended the summit and worked intensively for three days within a plenary or individual working groups to finalise the recommendations and achieve consensus. At the end of the summit consensus was achieved for all the evidenced-based recommendations which will now be incorporated into the final guidelines document that will published later in the year.
